What will I need to start fencing?
|
|
Just a pair of indoor shoes and sweat pants. We will provide all the necessary fencing equipment for the beginner classes.

What is the right age to start fencing?
|
|
Sword Players Fencing Academy offers fencing to people 10 years and older. If you are healthy, there is really no upper age limit. Many people start fencing in their 50's and simply love it. If you've always had a fascination with swords or dueling please come by and try it.

Is fencing easy or hard?
|
|
It is relatively easy to catch on to the basics of fencing, however, mastering the sport might be rather challenging. And don't worry, while beginners often watch experienced fencers with amazement, soon enough these beginners acquire the necessary experience to inspire awe in those just starting on their paths.

Does fencing hurt?
|
|
People wouldn't fence if it really hurt, now would they? Sometimes you might get poked a bit harder than you'd want and that can leave a bruise. Usually the pain from being hit is the last thing people are concerned with as they are more focused on the fun or the challenge of fencing. But no worries! The protective equipment does work quite well!

What Qualities Make a Good Fencer?
|
All of them.
On the athletic side, speed and cardiovascular fitness rank foremost. Other traits that can be exploited are strength (for explosive power, not heavy handedness), manual dexterity, and flexibility. Quick reaction time is extremely important.
On the mental side, a fencer must be adaptable and observant, and have a good mind for strategy and tactics. Psychologically, he or she must be able to maintain focus, concentration, and emotional level-headedness under intense conditions of combat.
As far as body type is concerned, it is always possible to adapt your style to take advantage of your natural traits.

How Long Does It Take to Become Good?
|
There is a saying that it takes two lifetimes to master fencing. By the time anyone has come close to "mastering" the sport, they are long past their athletic prime. Some may feel that this is a drawback to the sport, but most fencers see it as a great strength: fencing never becomes dull or routine; there are always new skills to master, and new grounds to conquer.
Some students may start competing after about 6 months; however one shouldn't expect to be beating all opponents! Serious attempts at competing are generally possible after 2-3 years, when the basic skills have been sufficiently mastered. Then the mind is free to consider strategy.
A proficient level of skill can take a few years of regular practice and competition. Penetration of the elite ranks (world cup, international 'A' level) demands several days per week of practice and usually at least 5-10 years of experience.
Progress can be fast or slow, depending on the fencer's aptitude, dedication, quality of instruction, and the age at which they begin. Rapid progress normally requires at least two practices per week, and regular competition against superior fencers. With the increasing emphasis on athleticism in the modern sport, fencers are getting younger, and the champions are getting to the podiums faster.

How can I improve my technique without the help of a coach?
|
|
It is very easy to acquire bad habits and poor technique if you do not have the guidance of a knowledgeable fencing master, coach, or fellow fencer. If you are serious about improving your fencing, quality coaching is always your best investment.

Why do I need to join the OFA (Ontario Fencing Association)?
|
|
Becoming an OFA member is strongly suggested for all fencers and is required for membership at many clubs, including the Sword Players Fencing Academy. OFA membership is also required to compete at OFA/CFF competitions. The OFA membership starts at $5.00 per year.
